Yes, you read that right. It has taken me two years to finish reading a book start to finish without starting the book over. Which book is it? Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlett Letter. Yes I began reading it during the beginning of summer 2016 and just finished it today.
I began reading this book during a time when I was looking for distractions from daily life and could only dedicate myself to reading a paragraph to a few pages a day. What was distracting me?
Life of course. I was living in an apartment with regular inspections that required it to be extra clean and that is difficult with a child. I was walking everywhere we went for the most part and when we did have transportation we were at the mercy of someone else's schedule. I could take my iPad which at the time my kindle app was on, now I just use the cloud reader on my computer because my child is on my iPad instead of hers more than I am.
The book did not hold my attention longer than a few minutes at a time whether it was in a waiting room, or relaxing around the house. I think the biggest problem was becoming accustomed to the kindle app. It has a different lighting, and settings to change it. I also had the ability to change the size of the font on the page. I would set it as large as possible in order to not strain my eyes and sit outside with it and relax.
While it is obvious early on who shares the responsibility of Hester having to wear her letter he does not admit it publicly until his death is inevitable. He took care of little Pearl in his will, and we are left to wonder what happened to her.
It's your choice if you would like to learn something from this. Mainly I learned I am glad not to live in such a time.
